The Kgosi Sechele I Museum is a community based project for Kweneng District, Botswana, which has come out of local concern for the preservation and conservation of their culture. The museum was opened to the public in 1992, and it’s housed in one of the historical buildings. The structure was build around 1902 by the Bakwena tribe for the then residential colonial police commissioner. The building has been declared a National Monument. The museum is named after Kgosi Sechele I, the famous ruler of Bakwena who many consider to have laid the foundation of modern day Botswana. Kgosi Sechele I played a crucial role in fighting against the Boer's attempt to take Batswana and make them their own free slaves. Our Mission is to To preserve, conserve, research, promote and communicate ideas that enhances Kweneng District people’s understanding and appreciation of their natural and cultural heritage, for sustainable use. A few of our objectives is to provide a range of socio-economic and cultural benefits to the region and to serve as a cultural focus, to provide the local community with opportunities to broaden their cultural activities, to provide focus for social functions and entertainment and promotes the culture and history in Kweneng Region and to center for expertise providing opportunities for community enrollment in the museum work through volunteers, research, project work and membership.
