To ensure that African athletes are sufficiently prepared to compete at the youth Olympic Games, the Association of the National Olympic Committees of Africa (ANOCA) resolved to stage quadrennial African Youth Games. After the inaugural edition was held in Morocco in 2010, Gaborone, Botswana was awarded to host the 2nd edition in 2014. Botswana is a landlocked country, situated in the Southern part of Africa with Gaborone as it's capital and largest city. The 2nd African Youth Games (AYG) hosted in Gaborone from 22-31 May 2014 will be the biggest multi-sport competitions to ever be hosted in Botswana. About 2500 athletes, between the ages of 14 and 18, from 53 African countries are invited to bring their best young athletes to compete. The athletes are expected to partake in approximately twenty (20) sporting codes as either individuals or teams and they will then be awarded Gold, Silver or Bronze medals for first, second and third place respectively.
